first_imgIslamic State has released a video of the terror squad responsible for the Easter Sunday massacre.Days and even hours before the serial blasts that rocked Sri Lanka during Sunday’s Easter celebrations, Indian intelligence agencies had shared the names of at least six Islamic State terrorists with the island nation. Besides, Sri Lanka was also warned about Easter attack mastermind Zahran Hashim whose audio clips and videos were seized by Tamil Nadu police last year.India had reportedly warned Sri Lanka that ISIS was trying to influence the youth with the radical Islamic ideology and establish the Khalifah (Islamic rule) there. There were credible inputs with the Tamil Nadu police that the ISIS terrorists were even planning to murder some prominent South Indian leaders. The police had subsequently arrested six terror suspects who had formed the ISIS module in Tamil Nadu named Mohamed Ashiq A, Ismail S, Samsudeen, Mohammed Salauddin S, Jafar Shadik Ali and Shahul Hameed. Their names and adresses were reportedly also shared with the Sri Lanka police. The details were shared with Colombo two days and even two hours before the attacks, intelligence officials told Economic Times, adding that it was highly regrettable that Sri Lanka didn’t act. According to the intelligence officials, the ISIS terrorists in India were also in touch with Easter attack mastermind Zahran Hashim and there is a possibility that they were aware of the suicide bombings beforehand. The ISIS terrorists were active on social media and were propagating the radical Islamic ideology among the youth and hate against prominent Hindu leaders in India as well. The videos seized from these youth showed Zahran Hashim lecturing youth from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka to establish Islamic rule in the region. In a video released by the ISIS-owned news agency, Amaq, around eight terrorists appeared with seven of them masked who claimed the responsibility of the Easter blasts. The man standing with his face uncovered in the middle was Zahran Hashim, who is also suspected to be one of the suicide bombers.Anger grows in Sri Lanka over intelligence failureAnger is brewing on the streets of Sri Lanka over the alleged intelligence failure of the police and the government especially when they had been warned beforehand about a probable terror attack. Although Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Maithripala Sirisena have maintained that they were not aware of any prior information about the terrorist attacks, Sri Lanka’s police officials had issued an alert. Due to the relatively peaceful past and little known impact of the suspect terror group, National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ), there were not enough security arrangements in place especially during the mammoth gathering on Sunday’s Easter celebrations. This made it possible for the terrorists to strike various high-end hotels and churches across the country in a matter of a few hours killing 390 people.last_img read more

first_imgPrime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during a meeting on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic on June 13, 2019.IANSWith his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan listening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the countries which “promote, support and fund” terrorism must be held accountable. He also pitched for an international conference to discuss how the menace of terror could be fought better. In his address at the Summit of eight-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) here, he said the forces of humanity should shed their narrow-minded approach and join hands to eliminate the scourge of terrorism. The SCO-Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure should use all its power to fight terrorism, Modi told the leaders of the grouping, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.”Last Sunday, during my visit to Sri Lanka, I went to the St Antony Church (which was attacked by terrorists on April 21). There I realized that the ghastly face of terrorism can appear anywhere and anytime, claiming the lives of innocent people,” the Prime Minister said.”To deal with this threat, all forces of humanity should come out of their narrow-minded approach and come together,” he said. The St Antony Church was witness to the bloodiest terror attack in Sri Lanka in which around 250 people were killed.Modi went on to add, “The countries which promote, support and fund terrorism must be held accountable,” in a clear reference to Pakistan whose Prime Minister was also present.”India calls for an international meet to discuss how to deal with terrorism,” he said.Underlining the need for stability and security in the SCO region, the Prime minister said an important element in this regard is area peaceful, united, secure and prosperous Afghanistan”.He said India supports the efforts for an “Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghan-controlled peace process” and expressed happiness that a road map has been prepared for the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group.During his address, Modi also spoke about the need for the SCO members to work for better connectivity, healthcare, alternate energy and humanitarian cooperation. In the context of connectivity, he said India and the SCO region have links dating back to thousands of years.”This, our common region, needs better connectivity in the modern era. India’s focus on connectivity is reflected in the initiatives like the International North-South Transport Corridor, Chahbahar Port (development) and Ashgabat agreement,” he said. The Ashgabat agreement, which India joined last year, is a multi-modal transport pact among the nations like Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Pakistan and Oman.India also started an air freight corridor connecting Kabul and Kandahar in Afghanistan with New Delhi and Mumbai in 2017, the Prime Minister said.”Connectivity is a must for prosperity, regional integration, good governance, transparency and stability,” he said.Along with physical connectivity, the people-to-people connectivity holds no less importance,” he said.India’s E-tourism visa is available for most of the SCO nations, Modi said and announced that the Indian tourism website will soon have a Russian interface and a 24X7 tourism helpline in the Russian language for the convenience of the travellers from the SCO countries. In the context of healthcare, he said the SCO should lay thrust on working in this area from 2019 to 2021.India will be happy to share its experience regarding telemedicine and medical tourism, he added.last_img read more

first_img The problem he points out, is that we’ve become so dependent on electricity and electronic communications, that a big solar storm could cause power grids the world over to go down, and for GPS to become non-functional for an unknown amount of time, causing havoc across a wide spectrum of systems such as those used by the military, the Internet, financial institutions and of course aviation. And what’s more, he says, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way because there are many things that could be done to prevent such a nasty outcome. He suggests, for example, that power grids could be upgraded to better withstand such an onslaught. He cites how upgrades were made to many grids the world over after a solar storm in 1989 knocked out power to a large section of Quebec. Unfortunately, that storm was rather puny compared to other storms that have hit Earth. One in 1921 was bigger, and another in 1859 was so powerful that it caused telegraph machines to set fire to cable offices. A storm today of that magnitude could cause power outages lasting in some places for months. Upgrading transformers even more, he says, could prevent such an outcome. But then the question is, how far do you go? Since no one really knows how bad solar storms can get, no one really knows how much protection to build into systems. Because of that, Hapgood says we need to do our homework. There are records, he points out, of prior events and what occurred as a result, but they are all mostly hand written and stored in unknown locations. We need to find those, digitize them and make them available to researchers. We need to get better at forecasting too, he adds. Currently we get from ten minutes to about an hour’s notice for solar storms, very little time to take preventive action. Better satellites could be built and put into space that could open that window a little wider, perhaps giving grid operators or those that run satellites enough time to take evasive action that could save such facilities from damage. In summation, he writes, we as a world community need to take the possibility of a serious solar storm more seriously and then start doing things to minimize the damage that could result. Failure to do so could lead to widespread chaos and unknown circumstances thereafter. ( — In the business of everyday life, it’s easy to overlook things that could cause a serious disruption to how life is lived; floods happen, hurricanes, volcanoes and tsunamis like the one that devastated Japan last year. And now it seems, there is one more potential disaster we should add to the list: geomagnetic storms caused by coronal mass ejections from the sun. Mike Hapgood head of the space environment group with RAL Space, part of the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council, has written a commentary published in the journal Nature, suggesting that it’s time we quit burying our heads in the sand regarding the devastating impact a serious solar storm could have on modern populations. first_img Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Enroll Now for Free November 6, 2015 This hands-on workshop will give you the tools to authentically connect with an increasingly skeptical online audience. From smartphones to the Internet and beyond, computer technology has radically transformed how we live and work in the 21st century. When I founded The Protocol School of Palm Beach more than 17 years ago, I started out with nothing more than a computer, fax machine and printer, yet I still managed to run my business efficiently (or so I thought). Now, like many other entrepreneurs, I have access to high-tech software applications that didn’t even exist a decade ago and I find myself more productive than ever before.Over time, I’ve learned that these super-tools enable you to get more done in less time with fewer resources, if you know which ones to use and how to make the most of them. The problem is that there are so many resources to choose from, and their number is exponentially growing all the time. It can be extremely confusing. Additionally, implementing and learning a new system takes time and effort, so deciding which ones will work best for your business can be a challenge. To simplify the decision-making process, here is a quick overview of some of the most popular platforms categorized by task areas most relevant to entrepreneurs.1. Organization. As your to-do list grows, it’s more challenging to keep track of all the tasks that must get done on time. Project management tools including Evernote, Basecamp and Asana help you organize all of your information across multiple platforms in a single application.Related: Get Organized With These 6 Tips That Lead to More Productive Days2. Data storage. The cloud allows us to store vast volumes of information and media (text, audio, photo or video files), and access it almost instantaneously from any Internet-connected device. This enables entrepreneurs to work virtually anywhere, anytime, and easily share data with colleagues and clients while protecting their precious data from hard-drive crashes. Google Drive, Dropbox and Apple’s iCloud are the most widely-used platforms3. Social media.Social media has revolutionized the way companies communicate with their customers. It has leveled the playing field between entrepreneurs and large corporations to an unprecedented extent by enabling individuals to directly connect with their target audiences, make new friends, and speak to people on a personal level. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and a host of other social media sites gives you direct access to your client base, while platforms like Hootsuite enable you to coordinate your social media activities.Related: How BuzzFeed Discovered the Secret to Success on Social Media4. Marketing.Email may seem old-school at this point, but it’s still a highly effective method of engaging current clients and winning new ones over. This personalized form of communication lets you check in with customers and clients from time to time, send articles of interest, or just say “hello.” MailChimp and Constant Contact are just a couple of the services entrepreneurs can use to send out customized announcements, promotions and e-newsletters with easy-to-use templates.5. Finances. For entrepreneurs, finances generally fall into three categories: increasing revenues, billing, and tracking income. Fortunately, some applications help with all three. Quickbooks, FreshBooks and Square, for instance, enable users to quickly create professional-looking invoices while tracking which clients have paid and which haven’t. Getting paid on time enables you to run your business without undue stress. The tech tools now universally available to anyone with Internet access make this a Golden Age for entrepreneurs looking to take their business to the next level. Use these tech tools wisely, and you’ll be well on your way to success.Related: Why You Should Keep Your Personal and Professional Finances Separate Free Workshop | August 28: Get Better Engagement and Build Trust With Customers Now 4 min readlast_img read more
